Hair as a journey … it completely describes the process that I have experienced in my life with my hair.
My epic begins with the worst cut of my life in January of 2008.
I had just come out of braids and to “even it up” she cut SO much of my hair off that I cried and wasn’t leaving the house “ever again.” (Picture to the left). Consequently, I left that hair dresser in search for a sane person! I hated my hair so much it went back into braids for a continuous 8 month stretch until my senior year of college in which I permed my essentially natural hair and it fell about the middle of my neck (pictured below) .
However, the winter months seem to be very difficult and the harsh cold climates of the Midwest caused severe breakage to the middle/back of my hair. I was told that it would grow out, but the breakage continued to spread through the back of my hair like weeds on a beautiful green lawn.
I got another cut June of last year - an asymmetrical cut with a very short back. I counted over FIVE LENGTHS in my head. After this cut (foolishly I went to someone else because my regular hair dresser wasn’t available) I gave up (pictured to the right). In August of last year I did a corrective cut.
Over this past year, I have tried a myriad of styles including curly styles, flat ironed styles, and roller sets. With more emphasis on roller sets because it provides a mechanism for indirect heat.
This is where my actual journey begins. I am relearning the proper methods to deal with my hair from more deep conditioners to using proper hair utensils. In posts from this section of this blog, I will share my frustrations, my surprises, my joys and my fears and I welcome you all (particularly frustrated permies) to come along with me!
